Bariatric surgery experts have bestowed top accolades on the weight-loss surgical program at Tucson Medical Center.
As of April 2012, two groups – the ACS (American College of Surgeons) and the ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and the Bariatric Surgery) – combined their respective national bariatric surgery accreditation programs into one unified program to achieve a national accreditation standard for bariatric surgery centers, the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Center of Excellence was started in 2004 to advance the safety and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgical care. Surgical Review Corporation administers the program on behalf of the ASMBS.
The Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation is only awarded to surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. This allows reimbursement from major health insurers, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
“Earning the designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest quality care to bariatric surgery patients,” said Judy Rich, TMC president and CEO. “But most importantly, it recognizes our dedication to improving the overall health of our community.”
