Scores of community partners came out to the Tucson Medical Center Labyrinth for a press conference to kick off BEYOND: Commemorate * Celebrate * Commit, a community-wide celebration of health, diversity and goodwill, that will take place from sun up to sun down across Pima County on Saturday, Jan. 7.
In the months after the Jan. 8 shooting that claimed the life of Gabe Zimmerman and five others and injured 13, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, members of Zimmerman’s family and a diverse coalition of community partners formed the Tucson Trails Tribute. Zimmerman had been an avid trail runner.
The coalition’s mission is to promote physical and mental health by getting people out and about, engaging their bodies and brains in extraordinary public spaces. BEYOND: Commemorate * Celebrate * Commit is the inaugural event.
The coalition includes Tucson Medical Center, Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, University of Arizona Health Network, Pima Community College, Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Forest, Pima County and the jurisdictions within, Child and Family Resources, the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation, Fund for Civility Respect and Understanding, Grandparents in Residence, Downtown Tucson Partnership, Tucson Indian Center and Valley of the Moon.
Jan. 7 opening ceremonies kick off at TMC, 7-10 a.m., with a sunrise meditation at the TMC Labyrinth, interactive music making, a 2-mile fun walk, a health and wellness fair and more! The main event is at Reid Park, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and closing ceremonies at Kino Stadium 4-6 p.m. In addition, other events take place at more than 30 locations.
