Arizona Public Media features ACO model

Arizona Public Media last week highlighted the new Accountable Care Organization model intended to improve patient care and hold the line on medical costs by keeping people healthier, longer.

The story – which incorporates the voices of TMC President Judy Rich, patient advocate Terry Allen and primary care doctor Jeffrey Selwyn, who also serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for Arizona Connected Care – notes the aim is to strengthen communication and follow-through with patients, in an effort to stave off acute episodes.

Tucson Medical Center has a minority share in Arizona Connected Care, which is a collaborative, physician-driven organization.

During the interview with AZPM’s Andrea Kelly, Rich applauded the volunteer board of trustees and the medical staff for their commitment and their support. “For us, if this works, people will be using the hospital less than they are currently. So if you run a business that grows on inpatient admissions and you put a model of care in place that keeps people out of the hospital, then you’d better understand what you’re doing.  The overall goal is to improve the health of our whole community.”
