About 700 first-graders had a chance to see real Olympic gold medals, sing along with a retired firefighter and check out a ladder truck belonging to the Pascua Yaqui tribe at the fifth annual Water Safety is For You event.

The event, hosted by Safe Kids Tucson and its community partners, including Tucson Medical Center, involved students from Tucson and Sunnyside unified school districts in an effort to reduce child drowning.

The students throughout the school year learned about the ABC’s of water safety: Adult supervision, barriers around the pool and swim classes.

During the annual culminating activity, students visited a number of stations set up at the Edith Ball Aquatic Center in Reid Park, where they had a chance to talk with Olympic medalist Amanda Beard and learn a reach-and-throw method of pulling a potential drowning victim from a body of water.

The Pascua Yaqui tribe generously provided a special donation that will help provide funding for next year’s event as well.

“They’ve heard the safety messages in class throughout the year, so this was an opportunity to reinforce the messages we teach to the first graders,” said event coordinator Yomaira Diaz. “Hopefully, this will prepare them for the summer months as they are approaching.”

Community partners working together to raise drowning prevention awareness include Safe Kids Tucson, Leslie’s Swimming Pool Supplies, Tucson Medical Center, Drexel Heights Fire District, Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona, Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Rural/Metro Fire Department, Southwest Ambulance, Tucson Parks & Recreation, NextCare- Urgent Care and UPH Health Plan.
