TMC Campus in Bloom

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote the earth laughs in flowers.

If so, then the courtyard next to the Marshall Center must be in on a good joke.

Although the Tucson Medical Center campus relies largely on water-tolerant, hardy desert plants for splashes of cheerful color, grounds supervisor Brad Wedding said there is a goal of creating a mini-oasis at the entrances of the hospital.

“We want to be desert smart and have a campus that follows the guidelines of what our community expects to see in an arid environment, but we also want to set a welcoming tone and make visitors feel special,” said Wedding, who has been at TMC for more than two decades. “That’s our opportunity to make a first impression.”

A few weeks ago, Wedding said his staff came in on a Saturday to cheer up the entrance to the Marshall Auditorium. While the space is used regularly for conferences, he said, it was rather sparsely adorned with cacti.

The work hasn’t gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

CEO and President Judy Rich was one who said the flowers really brighten up the entrances. “It’s just one more example of how our staff works hard to promote a healing environment at Tucson Medical Center,” she said. “We all get so busy trying to do the best job we can for our patients – sometimes in daunting situations – that it’s important to take a moment and enjoy those small moments of natural beauty when we encounter them.”

  1. TMC is such a beautiful campus anyway with the rich history and artwork. This is nature’s way of putting the icing on the cake. Well, nature and the groundskeeping crew. 🙂 Simply gorgeous.
