Wellness Screening Made Easy Enough for a Caveman

Sure you might be able to save 15 percent in 15 minutes, but how about getting a handle on your health over lunch? Earlier this month, hundreds of employees at Geico, whose feisty gecko touts the money-saving claim, attended a company health fair and gained better insight into their own health.

The health fair was the kickoff on a series of monthly community health screens that TMC, in collaboration with Activate Tucson, is providing for area businesses implementing wellness programs.

“The Geico screenings were just the latest in our efforts to reach into the community and help folks better understand and manage their own health,” said Sylvia Brown, TMC community outreach coordinator.

The wellness program started last year with TMC providing blood pressure checks, diabetes and cholesterol screens, BMI measures, nutritional information and other wellness services for employees at local small business.

These events have evolved into mini health fairs for employers of all sizes and include other health-conscious vendors and services, such as skin care, dental services, massage, Zumba demonstrations and more.

The TMC team at Geico consisted of about a dozen screeners and educators, including staff from Saguaro Physicians. More than 200 Geico employees participated.

“I was so floored; they did such a wonderful job,” said Vicky Laraia, LPN, OHN, with Geico Health Services. “Even though they were busy the whole time, they didn’t let anyone go unscreened.”

The screens help identify potential health risk factors that might otherwise go neglected or unnoticed, Brown said. And by going to into the workplace, it makes getting health screens so easy that even a caveman could do it.
