Free Pool Inspections Ensure a Safer Summer

Got a pool?

Got assurance it’s safe for the kiddos?

If the answer is no to that last question, you might consider a call to Safe Kids Tucson, which provides free pool safety checks to help homeowners prevent water-related accidents.

“Sometimes, when you live somewhere and see the same surroundings all the time, you don’t recognize the factors that could impact safety,” said Safe Kids coordinator Yomaira Diaz.

The program was launched in 2011 using grant funds from Safe Kids Worldwide. Tucson Medical Center is the proud lead agencyof Safe Kids Tucson.

Diaz said professionals who have received training in water safety will go through a substantial checklist.

Among the items they’ll inspect:

  • gate latches
  • rescue equipment
  • fence height, and ways children might be able to clamber over the top, whether it be a nearby tree or furniture pushed up to the fence line
  • fence width, to make sure children can’t squeeze in between fence bars
  • toys and other enticing objects, which could tempt children to try to enter the space.

The inspections are free and are available anywhere within Pima County.

So far this year, there have been three pediatric water-related accidents, and Diaz said the majority of accidents are preventable. “We want families to enjoy the water this summer, but we want to make sure everyone is safe at the same time,” she said.
