TMC Recognized for Helping Employees Stay Healthier Throughout Southern Arizona

It seems only fitting that an institution that provides health care should celebrate good health.

Tucson Medical Center recently received the “Healthy Workplace Award of Excellence” through Activate Tucson, a collaboration of Tucson organizations banding together to curb obesity and chronic disease.

The Healthy Workplace Award of Excellence recognizes the initiatives employers are taking to promote healthy lifestyle choices for employees.

TMC was acknowledged for its work on two different tracks, said Annemarie Medina, the vice president of corporate and community partnership for the YMCA of Southern Arizona, which is one of the founding partners of Activate Tucson.

In part, it was recognized for its emphasis on helping employees make healthier choices, whether that be joining a walking group or participating in a run or making smarter selections in the cafeteria.

The nonprofit hospital was also recognized for its work in assisting employees at other organizations as well.

TMC joined forces with the YMCA as part of a worksite wellness program to give an estimated 1,000 employees throughout the community the skinny on their health. Volunteers, including TMC clinical staff and health educators, provided free screenings to small businesses that hoped to give their workers more information on vital health information such as blood sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as blood pressure readings and weight-to-height ratios.

“As we know, we have to find ways to control health care costs, focusing on prevention is a part of that,” Medina said, noting healthier employees also helps boost productivity and decrease turnover.

“TMC has stepped up internally and externally,” she said.
