Movie-Quality Star Wars Characters Attend Father’s Day Weekend Reading Event Saturday at TMC

Come to think of it, Luke Skywalker probably was conflicted on Father’s Day, given he could lay claim to the ultimate Bad Daddy.

But for those of us seeking to find balance in the universe and hoping The Force remains with us after all, a read-in at Tucson Medical Center might be just what the doctor ordered.

Just in time for Father’s Day, on Saturday, June 16, Star Wars characters, including Darth Vader and Darth Maul, as well as Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll will host story-time for kids, rounding out a Fathers Read series that launched earlier in June. The stories kicked off the Books for Kids program at TMC for Children, which will allow children in the pediatric unit to pick out books to take home with them.

The events, with help from Tucson’s mayor and police and fire chiefs, as well as the curator of the Tohono O’odham Nation’s Cultural Center, also are geared to encourage men to become more involved in their children’s education, given research showing that children have better educational outcomes when both parents are highly involved.

The series culminates in a larger event, open to the public and attended by a host of Star Wars characters from the Dune Sea Garrison, which is the Arizona chapter of the international Star Wars costuming club known as the 501st Legion. Members of the group create movie-quality, screen-accurate costumes of the “bad guys” from the Star Wars series, from Scout Troopers to Stormtroopers, and put them to good use doing children’s charity events.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children, as well as their favorite books for story time, on Saturday, June 16, from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the TMC Marshall Conference Center.

Don’t make us use our Jedi mind tricks.

And in the interim, metaphors be with you.
