Arizona Daily Star Highlights TMC’s TLC for Preemies with Common Affliction

The Arizona Daily Star ran a story this week highlighting the less-is-more approach being taken at Tucson Medical Center to treat a common affliction that affects many premature babies.

The article noted Dr. Carlos Flores presented findings at the Pediatric Academic Societies conference in May that calls into question the longstanding standard approach of using drugs and surgery to treat patent ductus arteriosus, in which a blood vessel in the chest fails to close. Tucson Medical Center since September 2009 hasn’t used drugs or surgery – and as it turns out, the problem typically resolves on its own.
