TMC Takes a Silver In Organ Donor Registry Challenge

Tucson Medical Center took the silver medal in the second annual Hospital Donor Registry Challenge for hospitals with more than 400 licensed beds.

To mark National Donate Life Month in April, 54 hospitals and healthcare facilities competed to see who could do the best job of registering new organ and tissue donors.

With 2,300 people waiting for organ transplants in Arizona, no one can afford to be complacent. In all, hospitals statewide registered nearly 3,800 new donors. That won’t necessarily resolve the problem, however, since it takes a certain set of circumstances for organ donation to occur, which is often through brain death. Only about one percent of all deaths in the U.S. result in brain death, the larger the donor pool, the more likely the chances of successful donations.

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix took the gold. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center tied for silver.

Kris Patterson, a media specialist with the Donor Network of Arizona, said hospitals are a natural partner, given their mission to save and heal lives.

The support from staff and volunteers potentially helped thousands of people, she said. “We thank them for their hard work!”

Sue Bentley, the nurse educator who helped head the effort at TMC, said she was pleased to accept the recognition.

“Deciding to donate is a very personal decision,” Bentley said, adding some people made that decision through losing a loved one. “Donor network of Arizona follows up on families so they are not ‘alone.’”

To register as an organ and tissue donor in Arizona, sign up online at DonateLifeAZ.org, call 1-800-94-DONOR or check the box on their driver’s license or ID application at the Motor Vehicle Division.
