Yesterday, the space shuttle Endeavor was being transported cross-country and stopped here in Tucson to pay tribute to former Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband Mark Kelly. The shuttle, atop NASA’s 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, did a loop around Tucson this afternoon before continuing its journey to Edwards Air Force Base where it will stay overnight, before ending its trip in Los Angeles.
A part of that fly over took the shuttle right over Tucson Medical Center and several staff had the opportunity to catch both a glimpse and a photo. One word seemed be the unanimous description of the sighting: awesome.
“What an awesome opportunity to see the Space Shuttle today!” said Dawn Kirschenman, a manager in for the I/S department. It was a sentiment that was echoed by many others.
Yesterday was surely a moment in history, and people all over Tucson flooded outdoors to snap photos to commemorate the event as best as they could.
“I was just leaving TMC Hospice/Peppi’s House and coming back to the hospital when the flyover happened. I caught this photo on my ipod touch,” noted Reverend Mary Klaehn, a TMC Chaplain.
The attached slideshow shows a compilation of many of the photos taken by TMC staff during the passover.
