Make a difference: Consider coaching Girls on the Run!

Calling all coaches!  Girls on the Run of Tucson needs your help!

You can help prepare girls in grades 3, 4 and 5 for a lifetime of healthy living and self-respect by becoming a coach for the after-school program, Girls on the Run! (GOTR)

Coaches do not need to be elite runners.  As long as you live a healthy lifestyle and are committed to improving the lives of girls, you can serve as a head coach, assistant coach, or junior coach!  GOTR coaches empower girls by encouraging positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

GOTR sites are located throughout the Tucson community and surrounding areas.  Practices begin the week of Jan. 28 and run through mid-April.

All coaches:

  • Must attend a half-day training session on Jan. 19
  • Must attend the end-of-season 5K event on Apr. 21
  • Must submit to a background check

Head coaches:

  • Must be female and at least 21 years old
  • Must commit to 7-10 hours per week for 10-12 weeks, including two 1 ½ hour lessons weekly plus planning time
  • Complete First Aid/CPR certification (This will be provided at coaches training)
  • Prepare, organize, and supervise two weekly lessons to implement the Girls on the Run curriculum
  • Lead the program participants through each lesson
  • Interact with parents of program participants

 Assistant coaches:

*This is a perfect opportunity for individuals who can’t make the more rigorous commitment of being a head coach

  • May be male or female and at least 18 years old
  • Must commit to 3-5 hours per week for 10 weeks, including two 1 ½ hour lessons weekly
  • Must assist with all aspects of the facilitation of the GOTR curriculum
  • Attend coaches meetings in absence of head coach

Junior coaches:

  • May be male or female under age 18
  • Must commit to 1.5-3 hours per week for 12 weeks
  • Junior coaches can choose to attend both program sessions per week OR commit to only one day a week
  • We ask each junior coach to determine which schedule works the best for them and to maintain that schedule throughout the program for consistency on behalf of the girls
  • Each junior coach is asked to support the head and assistant coaches and program participants in many ways
