A freshly refurbished section of Tucson Medical Center is the new habitat for Southern Arizona’s leading physician group of specialists in high-risk pregnancies. It’s another milestone in a multi-year transformation of the TMC campus.
Obstetrix Medical Group of Arizona, known in Tucson since 1986 as Tucson Perinatal Services, now occupies the space on the east side of the hospital that previously housed TMC Ambulatory Surgery. The hospital has moved its Ambulatory Surgery procedures to TMC’s new Surgical Tower, which opened in May 2013.
The vacated space is now beautifully repurposed to house the region’s premier providers of high-risk pregnancy care, including consultation for complicating factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma. Obstetrix employs advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound, and offers preconception and genetic counseling and testing.
“The phrase ‘Expert Care When You’re Expecting’ describes what we provide to ALL our patients,” said Hugh Miller, M.D., medical director. “As maternal-fetal medicine experts (formally called perinatologists), we deliver quality high-risk obstetrical care to the women of Southern Arizona and their families. We are there for our patients from the point of referral to delivery, and even beyond delivery, providing individual attention and continuity of care.”
Obstetrix is Southern Arizona’s only perinatal practice providing 24/7 in-house coverage, working around the clock in TMC’s Labor & Delivery unit. Tucson Perinatal Services is an affiliate of Obstetrix Medical Group. The local main offices are in Tucson, and Ostetrix has satellite clinics throughout Southern Arizona including Casa Grande, Nogales, Safford, San Xavier, Sells, Sierra Vista and Willcox.
TMC Campus Improvements
As one of the final pieces of a seven-year, $250 million renovation of the TMC campus, the upgraded Obstetrix facility represents another addition to the high-level services offered to the community – including this spacious addition to the TMC’s Women’s Center:
- Close to 9,000 sq. ft.
- 5 ultrasound rooms with private bathrooms
- 4 prenatal rooms with private bathrooms
- Non-stress test room
- Clinical Research Lab
- Call center, break room and multiple offices
The new physician offices are just down the hall from TMC’s Labor & Delivery unit, among the busiest birth centers in the state (total births at TMC in its nearly 70 years of obstetrical service: 200,000). While Tucson Perinatal Services has offered around-the-clock coverage for TMC for many years, the proximity of the new facilities will help facilitate the highest level of care at all times. The perinatology specialists of Obstetrix have been an important part of the advancement of TMC’s services for women and families.
This fall, TMC for Women will welcome obstetricians and gynecologists affiliated with Genesis OB/GYN to the 2424 Building, located at 2424 N. Wyatt, near the Beverly entrance to the TMC campus. Like the new Obstetrix facility on the east end of the hospital, the 2424 Building in the western campus also has been renovated by TMC to provide the latest amenities.
The TMC campus has been transformed over the course of the past seven years. The centerpiece of the hospital’s makeover has been the new four-story Orthopaedic and Surgical Tower, which opened last year. Other major elements have included roads, parking areas, walkways and expanded Pediatric and Mother/Baby units.
