TMC supports local construction industry with new southeast area campus

Rincon MOB Front Elevation 2-02-2016Construction is under way at the new Rincon Health Campus, an $11.5 million investment in serving the health needs of southeast area residents.

The 44,000-square foot complex at Houghton and Drexel Road also is helping to support the economic health of the community. Of the 22 companies serving on the primary design team or as subcontractors, 17 of them are based in Tucson, and another has a Tucson office.

As the community’s 15th largest employer, TMC understands that economic health and physical health are inextricably linked, given strong associations between poverty and poor health outcomes.

And as the community’s only locally governed, nonprofit hospital, TMC also understands the importance of investing locally.

Richard Prevallet, the vice president of facilities for TMC, said the Florida-based Haskell Company won the bid for design-build of the facility, contingent on local hiring of contractors. Among the trades being done by local companies: mechanical and plumbing design, landscape design, construction management, electrical design, civil engineering, surveying, concrete, roofing, windows, framing and plant relocation.

“It was important to us that the people they hired needed to be local first,” Prevallet said. “It’s good for the Tucson economy and it’s good for the construction industry in Tucson.”

The two-story, multispecialty clinic will not only feature adult and pediatric primary care services when it opens in the fall, but will meet a variety of other patient needs as well, including imaging, wound care, physical therapy, and an infusion clinic. A number of specialty services also will be offered on site, which may include OB/GYN, cardiology, psychiatry, dermatology, neurology, orthopaedic and endovascular services.

“It really will create a medical destination where people can access a wide variety of services within one building,” he said, noting the second story is being shelled to accommodate future growth, which may potentially include an outpatient surgery center.

The building’s exterior will have a similar aesthetic with facilities on TMC’s central campus on Grant Road, sharing similar colors and materials to help patients easily identify the new building as a TMC HealthCare facility.
