TMC welcomes new chief of staff, executive medical director

Tucson Medical Center is pleased to announce J. Paul Yurkanin, M.D., FACS, is now serving as the TMC chief of staff, effective July 1.

Dr. Yurkanin is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and regularly participates in medical student and resident education. An accomplished urological surgeon, he lectures nationally and internationally to physicians, researchers, and other medical practitioners. Dr. Yurkanin also conducts clinical research in minimally invasive surgical techniques and has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals.

“We enthusiastically welcome Dr. Yurkanin as chief of staff,” said TMC President and CEO, Judy Rich. “He has strong operational knowledge and values our mission as a community hospital.”

The chief of staff oversees the medical team, ensuring doctors meet proper credentialing, regulatory guidelines and hospital quality standards. Dr. Yurkanin has a long history at TMC, as a surgeon and in leadership – working with staff, administration and patients.

“I look forward to being a part of the collaborative efforts at TMC, working with the physicians and administration to ensure Tucson’s community hospital continues to provide high-quality, accessible care in a patient-focused setting,” said Dr. Yurkanin.

Dr. Yurkanin studied at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and served at the University of California, Davis and Cedars-Sinai medical centers. He soon returned to Tucson and founded a successful specialty practice. Dr. Yurkanin is an avid Tucson hiker who enjoys spending time with his wife and their three children.

The former chief of staff, Dr. J. Manuel “Manny” Arreguin has stepped into a new position, created specifically to fully engage physicians and enhance administrative communications.

As the executive medical director, Dr. Arreguin will work with Dr. Yurkanin and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rick Anderson, to optimize the partnership and strategic planning with the medical team.

“TMC is taking another progressive step by ensuring stronger communication and connection with its physicians. Increasing physician input will further streamline processes, identify efficiencies and improve care delivery,” said Dr. Arreguin.
