‘Maynards to the Moon’ challenge: 5 tips to design a walking plan that’s out of this world

Meet Me at Maynards thinks our community can take 478 million steps in the coming year to “walk to the moon” in honor of Neil Armstrong’s historic one giant leap for mankind.

Starting Monday, Tucson will be challenged to walk a collective 238,857 miles!

That number may be astronomical, but we can get there, one step at a time. Tucson Medical Center has been a proud supporter of Meet Me at Maynards since the beginning, as part of our work to encourage active lifestyles.

Here are our five tips to get started on a walking plan, compliments of Employee Wellness Manager Amy Ramsey, that will make you a star.

  1. Schedule it.

Any new challenge or lifestyle change requires intentional, daily decisions.  Decide which days you can realistically fit in the walking time and give it its own space in your calendar. Don’t just leave it to chance, and assume you’ll get to it when you have an extra 30 minutes.  Life will happen and some days even your best plan will get derailed, but you’re more likely to follow through if you’ve got a solid plan.

  1. Get proper footwear.

Quality shoes and socks can be found in many different price points, so go with something that feels good and fits properly. There’s something to be said for going to a shoe store that help you find the right fit, rather than going it alone. Avoid cotton socks, which can cause blisters, and go for a synthetic blend.  Your whole body will thank you.

  1. Be visible.

Save your black workout outfits for the treadmill. Make sure if you are going to be walking in an area that requires you to be near traffic, or crossing streets, that you wear bright colors, reflective gear,  or even lights. It seems nearly everyone is a distracted driver these days, so don’t chance it. Make sure they can see you.

  1. Find a buddy.

Whether two-legged or four-legged, walking with someone is not only safer, but it’s more enjoyable. Let someone know what challenge you’re involved in, and challenge them to join you! It’ll help both of you stay more accountable to the goals you set.

  1. Get creative.

When time’s feeling crunched, it makes sense to stay close to your home or work to get that walk in, but if you’ve got extra time, make it a point to get in the car and drive to new spots to walk to keep things interesting. You could try some trails, check out new neighborhoods, or start at a new coffee shop, knowing that when you return you can treat yourself to a cup.

Celebrating 4 years of Meet Me at Maynards – come downtown for a party April 15!

meet-me-at-maynardsMeet Me at Maynards (MMM), the weekly free social walk/run in downtown Tucson, will celebrate its 4th birthday with a party that includes a 4-mile walk/run, live bands, an amusing game, and BBQ.  The event is sponsored by Tucson Medical Center.

More than 1000 “MMM athletes” are expected to gather for the celebration.

Walkers and runners along the route will be entertained by eleven local bands and musicians, including Guilty Bystanders, Tucson Pipers, Shameless Flirts, The Levinson Group, Cadillac Mountain and the Determined Luddites.

The festivities will also include a tax-day themed hunt game called, “Hunting Deductions,” which assumes each team has a “tax liability.”  The teams will follow clues to eight different downtown locations, and must perform an activity to earn a stamp from the game “auditor.”  Each stamp reduces the team’s tax liability.  A perfect score will earn a “tax refund.”  The refund is paid in tickets for a raffle drawing for gift certificates, mostly from downtown businesses.

At the completion of the game, a BBQ will be held in the courtyard of Hotel Congress.

Milestone: Monday’s ‘Meet Me at Maynards’ will be MMM #200

Meet Me at Maynards, the weekly free social walk/run in downtown Tucson (with support from TMC!) , will celebrate its 200th consecutive Monday on Feb. 4, 2013. Here’s the full story from the MMM press release:

Meet Me at MaynardsMeet Me at Maynards (MMM) began on April 13, 2009, with a small group of volunteers. The event ‘stuck,’ growing each week and quickly becoming a fixture in downtown Tucson.  After outgrowing the patio space at Maynards Market and Kitchen, 400 to 600 “MMM Athletes” gather across the street at Hotel Congress each Monday (rain, shine and holidays) between 5:15 and 6:00 pm…They walk or run a route designed to show-off Tucson’s downtown and 4th Avenue. The MMM cheer of “GET OUT” expresses the goals to get out and exercise, get out and make friends and get out and support our community.  More than 18 local eateries welcome the participants with MMM discounts and provide gift certificates for the free raffle at the conclusion of each evening. Perhaps it is just a coincidence that downtown Tucson has come alive and vibrant in the past three years, but total attendance of 80,000 at MMM may have something to do with it.

MMM has partnered with six downtown fitness venues, including O2 Modern Fitness, Yoga Oasis and Armory Park Center and the Y, to offer discounted prices for alternative exercise opportunities, such as indoor cycling, yoga, Zumba, Pilates, gym workouts, etc. Classes correspond with the MMM schedule so that people can check in, do their chosen exercise and be back at Hotel Congress for the live band, awards and drawing.

MMM offers incentive prizes to those meeting milestone attendance – eight times earns a free MMM T-shirt, 15 a MMM running cap, 50 a MMM pin and 100 earns a much coveted royal purple Century Shirt. Several athletes and volunteers have attended more than 165 times:

These athletes and volunteers proudly refer to MMM as “family,” creating a feeling of community and a sense of pride where they live and play. Although many may not have known much about downtown before, they now know where to see historic and beautiful sites, and where to park, eat and drink and be entertained. One example of their sense of pride is Trash Night on the third Monday of each month. Since its inception three years ago, at the suggestion of MMM Athlete Julie Kluge, more than 850 bags of unsightly trash have been collected. In fact, a frequent refrain is there is no longer enough trash to fill their bags

Meet Me at Maynards was developed and is hosted by Meet Me Concepts, owned by Jannie Cox, her husband David Syverson and Randy and Tia Accetta.  Expanding the idea of healthy communities is a goal shared by the founders and volunteers.  Meet Me at Maynards will celebrate its fourth birthday on April 1, Meet Me at La Encantada will celebrate its first birthday on Wednesday, March 6th, and in Boise, Idaho Meet Me Monday is celebrating six months.
